Here’s the truth: New York’s Parole Board regularly denies release based solely on the one thing that a person can never change, namely their crime of conviction, which does nothing to indicate how much a person has transformed. Worse is that these decisions are defined by stark racial bias. This injustice, coupled with brutal sentencing laws, have created a crisis of aging and death in prison.
