Turkey season starts Saturday in New York Unmute JOHNSON CITY (WBNG) Saturday marks the official start to turkey hunting season in the state of New York. The season lasts from May 1 until May 31. Before getting into the tree stand or blind, the New York Department of Environmental Conservation wants to remind hunters to make sure they are registered and have their turkey permits. Each hunter will be allowed to harvest two bearded turkeys, yet, only one per day. About 90,000 hunters have already received their permit Hunting hours will be restricted to right before sunrise until noontime. The DEC is prohibiting hunting during the afternoon hours because this is when hens are most active and they do not want to disrupt the mating process.

And if you are itching to get out to fish  Governor Cuomo announced earlier today .the fishing season for popular cool water species such as walleye, northern pike, pickerel, and tiger muskellunge begins on Saturday, May 1. I did not know this, but apparently, walleye are pretty sought after in the state of New York and according to the Governor s office they not only make for a great fishing challenge but they also make for good eating. The New York Department of Environmental Conservation has a whole list of lakes nearby in the Adirondacks that are great for walleye, pike, and all the species listed above to plan your next fishing trip.
