Cops seek volunteers, donations for Port Richmond cleanup on Friday

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Cops hope to attract volunteers and donations to a Friday cleanup of Veterans Park in Port Richmond.
Officers from the 121st Precinct plan to descend on the park located on Bennet Street across from St. Philips Baptist Church around 3 p.m.
“Veterans Park is Staten Island’s oldest park dedicated to our American Veterans, and is located in the heart of Port Richmond,” officers wrote in a flyer promoting the event. “Our goal is to brighten up and revitalize the park for a clean safe environment and to hold future fun events for the community.”

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. –– A gleaming new pavilion the result of a $6.5 million renovation effort was unveiled Tuesday at Conference House Park.
The 3,000 square foot open-air pavilion rests upon the piles of the original structure, which was built in 1935 in Tottenville, the southernmost point of New York State. Over the years, the pavilion was worn down by storms. The Parks Department closed it in 2011 due to extensive damage that it endured during Hurricane Irene.
DSNY unveils their new large-scale compost bagging machine in Fresh Kills

STATEN ISLAND N.Y. –– The Department of Sanitation (DSNY) kicks off International Compost Awareness Week by unveiling a large-scale compost bagging machine.
The Hamer Fischbein 2090, located at the DSNY Staten Island Compost Facility in Fresh Kills, is bagging up to 600 pallets of compost per week with a total of 1.9 million bags annually.
The compost is made from yard waste and food scraps that are collected at 125 drop-off sites around the city.
“Everybody who feeds this facility is doing the right thing and the fact that Staten Island is going to be the premier place for composting in New York City, it’s very exciting,” said DSNY Commissioner Edward Grayson.
