ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) Starting next week, schools can decide to do away with masks completely. While parents are excited, education officials are urging districts to pump the brakes.
One parent told News10NBC that she expects that at some point soon she won’t have to send her kids to school with a mask, but until then working with the school to implement this is no problem for her family. I’m very excited that my son might not have to wear a mask on Monday, I m stoked,” said Shaunna Smith, a Greece parent.
Nicole Felts, a Penfield parent says she, too hopes her district adopts this sooner rather than later.

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. – Gov. Andrew Cuomo says New York State schools will reopen for full in-person learning in the fall, as long as COVID-19 cases continue decreasing as expected. Our children lost so much as COVID struck our state. A year of socialization, a year of memories, and even more,” said Cuomo. While teachers and school administrators did an incredible job pivoting to remote learning with virtually zero notice, there s no denying the discrimination students who did not have the right equipment faced.
CNHI ALBANY The politically influential teachers union has put its clout behind legislation that would give early retirement incentives to educators for both public school districts and state and community colleges. New York State United Teachers, a union with which the United University Professions for SUNY faculty members is affiliated, is hoping the legislation is approved by both the Assembly and Senate before the legislative session closes in just six weeks. According to the bill authored by Assemblyman Thomas Abinanti, D-Westchester County, the incentive would be temporarily open to employees who are at least 55 years of age and have at least 25 years of service. Currently, 30 years of service are required for employees in these positions to retire without penalty.
The union representing public school teachers throughout New York is setting a poor example by promoting a regressive act of protest.
New York State United Teachers recently mounted a campaign to remind parents that they have the right to keep their children from taking the state assessments being offered later this month. The unionâs pitch is this: âThis year has tested our kids enough. Parents: Know your rights to opt your kids out of the state tests.â
We agree that the novel coronavirus has put everyone through the wringer. Itâs been especially difficult for teachers and school administrators whoâve crafted various methods of instructing students â sometimes in person, sometimes virtually and sometimes both ways simultaneously. We applaud education professionals for the innovation and flexibility theyâve exhibited in delivering the best classroom lessons possible during this time.
