New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday faced mounting challenges to his leadership on the COVID-19 pandemic as state lawmakers threatened to strip him of the power to issue emergency orders and federal investigators scrutinized his administration’s handling of nursing home data.
The US Department of Justice has been examining the governor’s coronavirus task force and trying to determine whether the state intentionally manipulated data regarding deaths in nursing homes, two people familiar with the matter said.

On January 21, the New Rochelle Public Library (NRPL) and the Consulate General of Israel in New York co-hosted a virtual opening of the Israel Forum Collection at the NRPL. The collection’s books, mostly translated from Hebrew to English and Spanish, include a variety of topics, including culture, history, economics, agriculture, fiction, homemaking, fashion and exercise. The books will be available for loan, and related Zoom programs will enhance the collection’s mission.
NRPL President Emeritus Haina Just-Michael, hosting the event, said: “I don’t live in New Rochelle anymore, but New Rochelle lives in my family’s hearts and souls. Its diverse community has taught me and my family so many life lessons. At the core of the lessons I have learned is, of course, the New Rochelle Public Library.

Harckham Returns as Chair of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Committee for 2021-2022 Term
Albany, NY – New York State Senator Pete Harckham announced today that he is returning as Chair of the Senate Committee on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse for the 2021-2022 legislative term. He will also return as a member of the Committees on Environment Conservation and Energy and Telecommunications while also serving three other Senate Committees: Finance, Women’s Issues and Insurance.
New York State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins conferred the committee assignments prior to the start of the Senate session, which officially begins on January 6.
