WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) - The State Department of Corrections will close Watertown Correctional Facility on March 30, 2021.
NYSCOPBA (New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association ) President Mike Powers tells 7 News he received word of the closure during a conference call with state officials Monday morning. Two other prisons will be closed next year, including Gowanda Correctional Facility in Erie County and the Clinton Annex Facility in Dannemora.
Powers the town of Watertown prison employs about 400 workers, including 212 NYSCOPBA members.
WATERTOWN â Watertown Correction Facility will close early next year, according to the president of the New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association.
Michael B. Powers said he learned of the imminent closure during a phone call Monday morning with state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision personnel.
Watertown Correctional, which is slated to close March 30, is one of three facilities that will shutter. The others include Gowanda Correctional Facility, Erie County, and the Clinton Annex in Dannemora, Clinton County. Mr. Powers confirmed that Clinton Correctional, also in Dannemora, will not close.
Watertown and Gowanda correctional facilities are medium security prisons.

BUFFALO, N.Y. A representative for the New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association tells 2 On Your Side that the state has ordered three correctional facilities to close in the next 90 days, including the Gowanda Correctional Facility in Erie County.
According to the union representative, the other two prisons affected are Watertown Correctional and the Clinton Annex.
NYSCOPBA says the move to close the Gowanda facility will displace some 511 corrections officers and sergeants, which does not include civilian staff.
