(WKBW) — Road crews all over Western New York are preparing to take on the winter storm set to slam the region Friday and Saturday. Several weather advisories and warnings have been issued by the National Weather Service for much of Western New York already, 7 Eyewitness News reached out to several municipalities to find out how they are handling the preparations for the incoming weather. The New York State Department of Transportation said as of Friday morning, 185 trucks were being sent out to prepare the road surfaces, with a total of 460 operators and supervisors engaged to handle the storm.

A 52-year-old Utica man died Tuesday after the car he was driving hit a New York State Department of Transportation plow truck, according to a news release from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. Thomas L. Benjamin died at the Oneida Healthcare Center after the crash, according to a statement from county spokeswoman Samantha Field. Deputies responded to the crash in Lenox on State Route 31 at 4:52 p.m., near White’s Farm Supply, deputies said.

On January 28, the New York State Department of Transportation delivered a stop-work order to members of the Shinnecock Nation working on the second electronic billboard on tribal-owned land near the westbound lane of New York State Route 27, directly across the highway from a 61-foot sign erected by the Shinnecock Nation in 2019.

The new funding will allow localities to rehabilitate and replace bridges and culverts statewide. It builds upon $500 million previously awarded to 143 local governments since 2016 for the rehabilitation and replacement of 298 bridges and culverts.
