Trumansburg Police Department releases revised plan

The Trumansburg Police Department (TPD) recently made public the revised version of its state mandated “Reform and Reinvention Collaboration Plan.” The plan begins with a message to the community from Trumansburg Police Chief Joe Nelson, originally posted in June 2020, in which he condemns the actions of the police officers involved in the death of George Floyd.  “I will not deploy officers into this community without knowing they can be trusted to do their job in accordance with the law, while maintaining the appropriate demeanor you deserve,” Nelson states.  Floyd’s death inspired youth-led protests in the village last summer.  The drafting of the plan was prompted by an executive order from New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. By John Camera Middletown SHARE “It’s quite clear that Governor Cuomo enacted this legislation to shut us up and get us off the streets without intending to have a true and honest dialogue,” said Luisa Fuentes, a local attorney. She, along with fellow attorney Michael Sussman, authored a letter to Cuomo. They, along with 311 others who signed it, are calling for the April 1 deadline for Executive Order 203 to be extended. “I wrote this letter with Luisa Fuentes because many of us around the region felt that communities were not doing justice to the intent of this, nor to it’s spirit, and that in fact, in the end, this would boomerang and create more anger, Sussman said.

IPVI, domestic violence intervention program in Poughkeepsie faces dispute

However, in many of these cases the subject will not have been convicted of any crime before the program s intervening steps begin. That has Dutchess County agencies eager to implement IPVI, as it s known, facing opposition from the county Public Defender s Office. The public defender has a mandate to protect the constitutional rights of our clients. Foremost among those rights is the presumption of innocence of the accused. The IPVI program’s request for our involvement undermines our mandated duties, said Thomas Angell, Dutchess County s public defender.    Angell s office said it had provided Family Services with suggestions on how the two offices could work together, but those recommendations were not accepted.
