A man accused of attacking an Asian man in New York City s Harlem neighborhood has been arrested, city police announced Tuesday. Jarrod Powell, 49, was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with two counts of felony assault.
The 61-year-old victim, identified by family as Yao Pan Ma, was attacked on April 23, police said. The suspect approached him from behind, struck him in the back, causing him to fall, and then kicked in the head multiple times, police said.
Ma was hospitalized and remains in a coma, his wife, Baozhen Chen, told CBS New York. This should not happen to my husband or anyone else. This is America, she said. I m very scared right now. I m so worried that my husband might never come back.

The attacks come amid a wave of violence across the country, including a spate of mass shootings and hate crimes that have targeted Asian Americans – including a Friday night incident in East Harlem in which a 61-year-old Chinese American was attacked from behind, knocked to the ground and repeatedly kicked in the head, surveillance video showed.
