The three words that comprise Glenn Ligon’s neon sculpture, A Small Band (2015), are currently emblazoned on the Bowery façade of New York’s New Museum. Positioned at the threshold to a new exhibition entitled ‘Grief and Grievance: Art and Mourning in America’, they serve as a reminder of how far we haven’t come in addressing America’s racial injustice.

Okwui Enwezor s Exhibition, Grief And Grievance, To Open This Week

Curator Naomi Beckwith on How the New Museum s Show on Black Grief as a State of Being Honors the Vision of Okwui Enwezor

Photo: Andreas Gebert, 2011, Courtesy Museum Folkwang. “With the media’s normalization of white nationalism,” Okwui Enwezor wrote in 2018, “the last two years have made clear that there is a new urgency to assess the role that artists, through works of art, have played to illuminate the searing contours of the American body politic.” Those words come from the late curator’s proposal for the exhibition “Grief and Grievance: Art and Mourning in America,” which opens this week at New York’s New Museum (through June 6). In that statement, Enwezor tied a sense of white grievance that arose after the Civil War to the necessity of grieving in Black America, the target of a century and a half of violence.

Inside page of Peter Beard published by TASCHEN. Why it’s worth it: When the writer, photographer, and all-around bon vivant Peter Beard died this year at age 82, he left an indelible mark on the art world and everyone he met, from the wilds of Africa to the seedy bars of New York City. His life was marked by a ferocious pursuit of adventure, photographing endangered species and documenting his travels in beautifully intimate diaristic form, collaging photographs with drawings and notation. A gadfly who was equally at home as a social fixture, Beard delved into fashion photography, and collaborated with the likes of Andy Warhol and Francis Bacon, while living up to his nickname as Walkabout, cutting a fine figure with his year-round tan, blue eyes, and revolving door of beautiful women at his side. This book captures the spirit and craft of a man who lived large in every sense.
