ALBANY - New York Attorney General Letitia James on Friday proposed a new measure limiting when police officers can use deadly force, pointing to the string of unarmed Black people killed by law enforcement as the impetus for change.
James, a Democrat whose office is tasked with investigating police killings of unarmed civilians, introduced a new bill that would change state law that governs when law-enforcement officials can and can t use lethal force.
The bill would still allow officers to use deadly force if the officer reasonably believes someone is about to use deadly force against themselves or someone else.

Newly proposed legislation seeks to bring sweeping reforms to the way police in New York carry out law enforcement, including making the use of force a last resort.
New York Attorney General Letitia James says current laws set too high of a standard for prosecuting officers who abuse the use of force. The Police Accountability Act will make critical and necessary changes to the law, providing clear and legitimate standards for when the use of force is acceptable and enacting real consequences for when an officer crosses that line, James said.
