Maple syrup youth ambassadors join together to promote maple industry Kyle Hale Several maple syrup youth ambassadors of their respective states have joined together to form the Maple Coalition. Their group has been collaborating on projects for several months, deciding how best to help promote pure maple syrup. Maple Coalition members include Kenni Bores, Wisconsin maple marketing intern; Erin Wrisley, 2019-2020 Pennsylvania maple ambassador; Landis Crawford, 2020-2021 Pennsylvania maple ambassador; Rebecca Coombe, 2020 New York State maple queen; and Kyle Hale, 2020 New York State maple king. The first project is the Pass the Maple Challenge, a video-recorded task where they toss around a jug of maple syrup, with each person sharing a fact about the nutritious product.

Friend wants Central New York woman to have her freedom on wheels

Just over a year after her graduation from Rome Free Academy, Cherie Mellen Chabot’s life changed forever Oct. 9, 1983. She was just 19 years old. Chabot was in an accident on Route 26 in West Branch, NY. She failed to navigate a curve – she saw no signs warning her it was coming – and went over an embankment, landing in a stone drive after being ejected from her car. Her spinal cord was severed and she had other injuries as well. Chabot was paralyzed, likely never to walk again. But she continued to work after rehabilitation, married her husband Mark Chabot in September 1987 and had daughter Rhilea in July 1999. The couple now live in Canastota.

National Abolition Hall of Fame present Black History Matters programs

The National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum (NAHOF) in Peterboro is now in its second week offering free daily Black History Matters programs. The brief 28 programs will remain on the NAHOF website even after they conclude at the end of February. The programs explore key events in our national history and topics that are lesser known or whose implications are not usually understood. So far, this week’s programs have included a look at “The 13th Amendment and the Abolition of Slavery” Feb. 8. SUNY Morrisville Professor J. Thomas Hogle described the progress from the Crittenden Compromise to the ratification of the 13th Amendment (1860-1865). The realization evolved that the ending of slavery must be more than a war measure or a statute; it must be an amendment to the Constitution.

Farmers Market in Hamilton, NY offers fresh local products all winter

Parry’s General Store in Hamilton offers some of the sunshine of the summertime with their Indoor Winter Farmers Market, running the first and third Saturday of each month straight though until spring. “I really like that they do this,” complimented Lori Collins, who visited the market Jan. 23 with husband Marty. “I really miss this kind of stuff during the winter.” The Jan. 23 market featured the winter produce, eggs, greens and apple of Stone Brothers Farm and Greenhouses of Canastota; goat cheeses and local meat from Poplar Hedge Farm and Creamery in West Winfield; maple products from Schmidt’s Scattered Maples of Sherburne; and traditional style Pennsylvania Dutch farmhouse gouda cheeses and baked goods from Jake’s Gouda of Deansboro.
