INFLUENCED by the gloriously ridiculous B-movie imagery of the Fifties and Sixties, York artist Lincoln Lightfoot questions what might be in store for 2021. You can see his humorously absurdist answers when he makes his York Open Studios debut this summer, after the 20th anniversary show was moved from April to July 10/11 and 17/18. Lincoln’s digital-print images and oil paintings take the broad theme of surreal encounters with beasts that appear in recognisable locations: not so much King Kong climbing the Empire State Building in New York as a tentacled Creature From The Bottom Of The Ouse clambering on to a bridge in York.

THE number of students applying for places at York s universities has increased, despite the pandemic. And both the University of York and York St John University say the level of applications from international students look promising . Both universities have seen the number of student applications rise for young people wanting to start their studies in September 2021, compared to last year. A University of York meeting heard this could mean some job losses are not needed to tackle the impact of the pandemic as the sound student recruitment position meant that workforce planning measures such as redundancy would not need to be implemented at this stage .
York s new Community Stadium complex is to host Covid testing RAPID Covid testing is to be launched at York s new community stadium leisure centre. City of York Council said residents will be able to get symptom-free testing at the leisure complex at Monks Cross from next Monday, following an agreement between the authority and Better York. Paul Bickle, Better’s partnership manager for York, said the stadium leisure centre provided an ideal location for Covid-19 testing, offering easy access, plenty of parking and sufficient space to ensure social distancing at all times. The concept behind the stadium project was always that it would be a resource for all the community and it is fantastic to be able to play a small part in the city’s efforts to battle the ongoing pandemic, he said.

My friend Roger Clark, who has died aged 70, was a passionate and inspiring lecturer who taught generations of appreciative students at York St John University about the joys and complexities of literature.
Born in south London, to Margaret (nee Hoskin), a personal assistant, and her husband, Terry Clark, a Battle of Britain night fighter and accountant, Roger won a scholarship to Dulwich College and then did two literature degrees at the newly established University of York from 1969 onwards, followed by teacher training at Southampton University.
