How should funding for farming in Yorkshire Dales National Park be spent? - Helen Keep

Farming Diary by Helen Keep, senior farm conservation officer, the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority: THE trials and tribulations of Zoom meetings continued through February as the farm team embarked on a suite of seminars covering lunch-times and evenings over two weeks. In all, 135 farmers and land managers from all parts of the Yorkshire Dales National Park listened to talks about the updated Countryside Stewardship scheme, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs’ (Defra’s) Environmental Land Management scheme and a few thoughts on the brand new and soon-to-be-launched (fingers crossed) Farming in Protected Landscapes scheme. Zoom does have its positives but, as an attendee or organiser, you are definitely missing out on a cup of tea and a chat afterwards. Annual CCM News published

SKIPTON Auction Mart has published its annual newsletter CCM News, which features agricultural-related features and informed comment from sector experts, both in-house and externally, along with a round-up of the 2020 and early 2021 show and sale season. Nancy Stedman, trustee of The Friends of the Dales charity takes a closer look. THERE are many pressures facing the Yorkshire Dales, from loss of services, an ageing population and car-borne tourism to a disastrous decline in wildlife. One particular issue is how to conserve the many field barns which are such key features of the internationally recognised and unique historic landscape, created by livestock farmers and lead miners over the centuries. They contribute to our understanding of the history of the landscape, and many contain valuable historic features revealing how they were built and used. Although most are not listed, their value as historic assets is considerable.
