LAST week’s ‘mystery ruin’ was Norton Tower, Rylstone, and was correctly identified by Kevin Jackson, Gary Edwards and by Sam. Kevin tells me by coincidence he had been driving past the tower just days before it appeared in the Craven Herald and his wife had commented that she often wondered what it was; he had done a bit of research and had found an article in the Herald of three years ago just after it had been restored. After being designated a ‘building at risk’ repairs were carried out in 2017 by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority. It was in around 1540 that Richard Norton of Rylstone Hall built the fortified banqueting tower in an area where the Clifford family, of Skipton Castle, contested hunting rights.
