The World Heritage Centre and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) had proposed Selous’s delisting.
Delegates at the virtual 44th session of the committee put up a spirited opposition that resulted in an amendment on the original draft.
The Selous Game Reserve, with an area of 54,600 square kilometres, was first established in 1922 and added to the list of endangered World Heritage Sites in 2014.

Uganda led four other African countries at the Unesco World Heritage Committee conference in Fuzhou, China, in saving Tanzania’s Selous Game Reserve from being struck off the list of World Heritage Sites last week.

The vote to remove Liverpool was done by majority secret ballot following two days of heated debate among committee members.
The committee also decided on Monday to take the Salonga National Park in Democratic Republic of Congo off the list of endangered World Heritage Sites.
Salonga has been on in-danger list since 1999 due to conflict, poaching, deforestation, poor management and illegal occupation.

Liverpool’s Maritime Mercantile City in Britain was not so lucky as on Wednesday it became only the third site ever to be struck off the list for failing to maintain World Heritage criteria.
