Kongiganak Requiring People To Be Fully Vaccinated Against COVID-19 To Enter Store

Up until a month ago, the Kongiganak store only accepted orders over the phone, and store employees would then deliver the orders to people’s homes. This was because of COVID-19 policies the tribe had set. In the first week of March, the tribe updated its policy to allow fully vaccinated people into stores and other businesses, like the electric company.  “At both stores, vaccinated individuals are allowed to go in as long as they re wearing a mask and they’re social distancing,” said Sheila Phillip, Kongiganak Traditional Council secretary. “People that are not fully vaccinated, they can still make phone orders and their orders are delivered to their home.”

Bethel Saturday Market Postponed Until COVID-19 Cases Decline

Credit Dean Swope / KYUK It’s been more than a year since Bethel s Yupiit Piciryarait Cultural Center hosted a Saturday Market, and it’s going to be a bit longer until there s another one. On the advice of the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation, the campus has delayed the community event until May 15. YKHC classifies the region as being in a red zone for high community transmission of COVID-19. In this zone, it recommends only essential activities, like medical services and grocery shopping, occur in person. Cultural Center Program Director Teddi Worrock said that YKHC urged the UAF Kuskokwim Campus to shut down all in-person community events until coronavirus cases declined in the region. On April 2, the campus held a community art show. It was the first in-person community event on campus since pandemic restrictions began.
