As Rev. Joseph Cleveland addressed the council during the public comment portion of the meeting July 6, city Mayor Meg Kelly issued a warning to some in the assembled audience. “If you’re going to be ‘hmm-hmm’ and make remarks, we’re going to have you removed,” Mayor Kelly said. She subsequently demanded the room be cleared, declared “a recess,” and announced that the meeting was “adjourned.” The mayor, followed by some of the other members of the council, then left the room.

WILMNGTON Lincoln E. Roberts, 93, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 19, 2021. Lincoln was born in Washington, D.C., as one of eight children. Upon turning 18, he joined the U.S. Navy to serve his country in World War II before attending George Washington University (GWU). He graduated from the GWU School of Engineering in 1953 and began his lifelong career as a mechanical engineer. Lincoln was a very accomplished in his work and received recognition for holding over 25 U.S. patents, most of which are still commonly used today. Outside of his work, he was an avid woodworker, led trips for the Sierra Club, was a devoted birdwatcher and enjoyed taking his family on vacations throughout the Western United States. He loved being behind the lens of the camera to capture beautiful pictures of scenery and wildlife everywhere he went. McQuaig soon discovered Rainbow Promise, now called Christ’s Promise, an Auburndale church whose congregation is predominantly LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning). Her late mother, Lois McQuaig, was not gay but left the Baptist church and attended Christ’s Promise until her death in 2008. “I felt welcome the minute I walked through the door, and my mother did, too,” said McQuaig, 65. “It’s just the weird way that God led me to a church where I felt like I belonged.” Mainstream acceptance of the LGTBQ population has grown markedly in the past two decades. Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2015, and corporations now routinely recognize Pride Month in June.
