AI-designed serotonin sensor may help scientists study sleep and mental health

Serotonin is a neurochemical that plays a critical role in the way the brain controls our thoughts and feelings. For example, many antidepressants are designed to alter serotonin signals sent between neurons. In an article in Cell, National Institutes of Health-funded researchers described how they used advanced genetic engineering techniques to transform a bacterial protein into a new research tool that may help monitor serotonin transmission with greater fidelity than current methods. Preclinical experiments, primarily in mice, showed that the sensor could detect subtle, real-time changes in brain serotonin levels during sleep, fear, and so

Pregnant women who contract coronavirus in 3rd trimester unlikely to pass infection to newborn, study finds

Dr. Janette Nesheiwat says virus mutations ‘occur commonly and often’ and that the vaccinations have ‘been shown to still be effective’ amid new strain discovered in the U.K. In a study of pregnant women who were admitted to Boston hospitals during the spring of 2020, those who contracted coronavirus during the third trimester were unlikely to pass the infection on to their newborns. The study, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), was published in the journal JAMA Network Open. It included data from 127 pregnant women, 64 of whom tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. Of this group, 3% had critical disease, 16% developed severe disease, 11% had moderate disease, 34% had mild disease and 36% were asymptomatic. None of the newborns born to those 64 women tested positive for the virus.

Pregnant women unlikely to pass Covid-19 to their baby

None of their babies were infected with the coronavirus after birth     There was also no coronavirus detected in the placenta of the baby   Pregnant women who catch the coronavirus do not pass it on to their unborn children, according to data from a new study.  US-based researchers followed 64 women who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, the virus which causes COVID-19, between April 2 and June 13.  ADVERTISEMENT None of the babies tested positive for Covid-19 after they were born, and no coronavirus was detected in the placenta. While the Harvard academics warn the small sample size makes it impossible to rule out that some pregnant women could pass the virus to their children, it shows the natural defences of pregnancy fend off the virus, they say.

Infant opioid withdrawal therapy varies widely by treatment site

What Medical care for newborn infants who were exposed to opioids in the womb varied widely across 30 hospitals nationwide, according to a study funded by the National Institutes of Health. The study authors say that the findings underscore the need for clinical trials to determine the most effective treatments. The study was conducted by Leslie Young, M.D., of the University of Vermont and colleagues in the Advancing Clinical Trials in Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (ACT NOW) Program, part of NIH’s Helping to End Addiction Long-term Initiative. It appears in the journal Pediatrics. Opioid use disorder during pregnancy increased from 1.5 to 6.5 for every 1,000 hospital deliveries from 1999 to 2014, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Opioid use during pregnancy increases the risk for maternal death, miscarriage, poor fetal growth and preterm birth. Newborns who are exposed to opioids in the womb may also have withdrawal symptoms that require
