Yokogawa Fluid Imaging Technologies, Inc. manufactures industry-leading particle analysis instrumentation based on digital imaging technology. Our flagship product, the FlowCam, is the first automated particle analysis instrument to use digital imaging for measuring size and shape of microscopic particles in a fluid medium. With applications in oceanographic research, municipal water, biopharmaceutical formulations, chemicals, oil and gas, biofuels and many other markets, YFT continues to lead the way in imaging particle analysis.
The FlowCam is in use by the U.S. EPA, FDA, Pfizer, Amgen, Heinz, Nestle, Apache, and Scripps Institution of Oceanography, among hundreds of other organizations in over 40 countries and on every continent.
Fiber Analysis and Flow Imaging Microscopy
The analysis of fibrous particles has always presented a challenge. In systems that are volumetrically based like Coulter Counters, laser diffraction, and dynamic light scattering, Equivalent Spherical Diameter (ESD) is the only measurement provided, which is clearly not useful for fibers (example shown in Figure 1).
Due to this drawback, manual microscopy has been the main technique for the characterization of fibers where both width and length are analyzed. This process can be made dramatically quicker through the use of Flow Imaging Microscopy where computer algorithms are used instead of a human observer.
