In Lieu of a Festival, Northwest String Summit Will Host a Drive-In Concert Series This Summer

Updated April 22 at 11:28 PM Don’t call it a comeback, because it’s not. But it’s better than nothing. For the second summer in a row, the Northwest String Summit the annual jam band-centric roots music festival held just outside Portland in North Plains isn’t going to happen, at least not in the way it normally does, with thousands of campers pitching tents in the woods and listening to four straight days of dobro solos. But concertgoers will return to the Horning’s Hideout property this July they’ll just have to stay by their cars. The Peacock Park’n’Pick, as it’s being called, will take place over two weekends, July 20-21 and 27-28, and feature performances from String Summit regulars Yonder Mountain String Band, the Infamous Stringdusters, and Greensky Bluegrass.

Todd Snider Brings the Funk on His New LP

Todd Snider Brings the Funk on His New LP An insider’s look at the songsmith’s First Agnostic Church of Hope and Wonder Tweet Share “If folk don’t want no funk, it shouldn’t start none,” Todd Snider proclaims with a laugh. It’s funny, of course, because no one in the folk world is trying to start any funk. Well, that is, no one other than Snider on his new album First Agnostic Church of Hope and Wonder, which will be released Friday. For the past six months, I’ve been working on a book with Snider, and as a result, I had a front-row seat for the making of the record. I even accidentally got a co-writing credit on one of the songs when he used something I said in passing. It’s an album that is more than the realization of Snider’s funk dreams. It’s the culmination of a musical journey the artist has been on for more than a decade of his nearly 35-year career.

Live music will look and sound a lot different in Tuscaloosa in 2021, if it even comes back. After what one local manager called a “bleak” time for the industry, things are looking up to some degree. Despite a shaky COVID-19 vaccine rollout in the state with Alabama near or at the very bottom of state rankings in terms of percentage of the population vaccinated and percentage of doses received that have been administered shots in any arms mean we’re a few steps closer to “normal.”
