Davis men charged with insurance fraud
Davis residents Aaron Curtin, 42, and Andres Castellanos, 27, were arraigned on multiple felony counts of insurance fraud, conspiracy and destroying property after allegedly filing a false claim to receive an undeserved insurance payout after torching a vehicle, California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara announced Wednesday.
On April 20, 2019, Curtin reported his 2009 Audi A4 stolen and police subsequently recovered the incinerated vehicle. When Curtin filed an insurance claim, he told his insurance company he did not know who stole the vehicle, he did not loan the vehicle to anyone, and didn’t allow anyone to drive the vehicle. Curtin also claimed the vehicle was in good running condition prior to the alleged theft.

Dec. 22 An incarcerated Sacramento man convicted of trying to lure a 12-year-old girl to have sex with him is now accused of working with an accomplice to receive more than $11,000 in fraudulent unemployment claims, Yolo County prosecutors said.
This week, Taylor Lewis Gholar and his girlfriend, Sonia Chan, were charged with felony counts of grand theft, making a false and fraudulent insurance claim and conspiracy to commit fraud, according to a news release from the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office.
The charges against Gholar and Chan were the result of a vast probe into a California unemployment scam that revealed at least $140 million worth of improper payments made to inmates and their outside accomplices, a group of county district attorneys announced late last month.

A convicted sex offender received almost $12,000 in unemployment benefits while behind bars, authorities claim.
Taylor Lewis Gholar, 29, was convicted for a sex crime involving a 12-year-old girl and sentenced to three years in a California prison on December 10.
While in custody, he and his girlfriend are alleged to have received $11,688 from the state after submitting an unemployment application online. Following this conviction, Yolo County District Attorney Investigators were alerted that Gholar was fraudulently receiving Unemployment Insurance Benefits while being housed in custody in the Yolo County Jail, a statement from the Yolo County District Attorney read.

A former West Sacramento after-school teacher convicted of luring a minor for sex is facing new charges after fraudulently receiving unemployment benefits with his girlfriend’s help while in Yolo County Jail custody, the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office announced Monday.
Taylor Lewis Gholar, 29, was sentenced on Dec. 10 to three years in state prison for his conviction on counts of communicating with a minor for the purpose of lewd or lascivious conduct and going to a meeting with a minor for the purpose of lewd or lascivious conduct, all involving a 12-year-old former student. He’s currently serving his sentence at the Yolo County Jail.
