We’re back! The second pandemic edition of the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, Stories & Ideas kicks off this weekend, beginning with a virtual ceremony announcing the winners of the 2020 L.A. Times Book Prizes.
This year’s 26th celebration of the written word begins with the Book Prize announcements
April 16 at 5 p.m. Tune in on Twitter, Facebook or YouTube.
The festival proper opens
April 17 at 10 a.m. with the help of USC’s President Carol L. Folt, featuring surprise appearances by Times writers and a performance by the USC Trojan Marching Band. Times columnist Patt Morrison will moderate.

The
Los Angeles Times Festival of Books will be streaming virtual panels from April 17 to April 23. Over the course of the festival, more than 100 authors will participate in the panels to discuss different topics and writings.
Below are some of the featured panelists on this year’s Festival of Books mainstage:
Guy Raz and Mindy Thomas (Saturday, April 17)
Guy Raz is an award-winning journalist, creator and radio host. He is widely known for hosting and creating the podcasts “How I Built This,” “The Rewind” and “Wisdom From The Top,” and he is also the co-creator and former host of NPR’s “Ted Radio Hour.” Throughout his career, Raz has interviewed more than 6,000 people from various fields, and his shows have amassed over 19 million listeners every month.

Festival of Books kickoff, presented with USC
Join us for the kickoff of the 26th annual Festival of Books featuring Dr. Carol L. Folt, USC president, along with surprise appearances by L.A. Times writers and a performance by the USC Trojan Marching Band. Please join in this prelude to the weeklong virtual celebration of books with conversations, panels, children’s and poetry readings and more! Times columnist Patt Morrison will host the event.

The SAG Awards were presented last weekend, with prizes in the movie categories going to Chadwick Boseman, Viola Davis, Yuh-Jung Youn, Daniel Kaluuya and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” cast. It was the first time all four individual movie honors went to people of color. Glenn Whipp took a look at what the winners might mean moving forward, as the quartet of SAG acting winners have gone on to win on Oscar night in two of the last three years.
