This Halifax startup develops original optical filtering technologies for modern eyewear. Coloursmith is led by CEO Gabrielle Masone, who originally moved to the East Coast to attend Dalhousie University and stayed to build her company. The company raised a $600,000 pre-seed round in June 2019.
Coloursmith has had a global presence from the start, working with a number of world leaders in vision care. Its current focus is in medicine and eye protection, specifically blue-light blocking contact lenses. Coloursmith is also working on sport-specific lens applications, such as adding sport lenses to contacts, providing UV and anti-glare protection, and depth perception without compromising visibility.

A US$70 million funding round has been successfully closed by Highview Power, a UK-headquartered company which has developed a liquid air energy storage (LAES) system called the ‘CRYOBattery’.
Highview’s proprietary technology is aimed at enabling bulk storage of electricity for grids safely and for long-durations, aiding the integration of renewable energy and providing grid services. The CRYOBattery cools ambient air to -196°C which is then stored at low pressure before being heated and expanded to drive a turbine and generate power. CEO Javier Cavada previously told
PGIM Real Estate acquires strategic equity stake in Australian VC Taronga Ventures

New York-based PGIM Real Estate announced on Wednesday it has acquired a strategic equity stake in Australia-based venture capital firm Taronga Ventures, further supported by a commitment to Taronga’s RealTech Ventures Fund.

This week, 36 major corporate clean energy buyers released a statement outlining top federal policy priorities they see as essential to accelerate the transition of clean energy and reach deep decarbonization. Energy Buyer Federal Clean Energy Policy, released by the Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance (REBA), is exceptional because of its specificity. It spells out policies the corporate leaders see as a priority to reach their decarbonization goals a departure from some sign-on letters that are more general in their support for corporate sustainability.
Miranda Ballentine, chief executive officer of REBA, says the incoming Biden administration opens the potential for new conversations to assert ongoing corporate climate priorities.
