Amazon workers at an Alabama warehouse voted not to join a retail union, a setback for labour organisers and a significant victory for the world’s largest online retailer.
The election wasn’t close. Of the more than 3000 ballots cast, Amazon garnered 1798 nos and the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union won 738 yeses.
The vote result is a big win for Jeff Bezos who has fought against unions for years.

While federal officials set aside 505 contested ballots most of them disputed by Amazon, according to the union there weren’t enough of those to change the result. The National Labor Relations Board, which oversees workplace union elections, began counting ballots on Thursday (Friday AEST).

Workers who voted against a union at Amazon’s Bessemer fulfillment center Friday expressed relief that the nearly five-month organizing effort was over, while organizers vowed to fight on after the online retailer appeared to successfully beat back a historic union challenge.
Unofficial results tallied Friday morning by the National Labor Relations Board were 1,798 no votes against unionization, 738 yes votes for the union, 505 challenges and 76 voided ballots. The NLRB said 5,867 employees were eligible to vote. Turnout was about 55 percent.
