The digital divide in Rutherford County could soon be closing as Eagleville and Rockvale residents prepare to receive access to high-speed, broadband internet service as early as this summer.
The Murfreesboro Planning Commission delayed a vote about changing the name of Mercury Boulevard to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for two weeks after a lengthy discussion to keep or drop the doctoral title.
As stated in previous meetings, a two-mile section of Mercury Boulevard would become Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, and a 600-foot stretch of road beyond South Rutherford would take on the name John Bragg Highway.
The concern is whether or not including Kingâs doctoral title stems from the potential navigation mishaps that could come from âDoctorâ and âDriveâ sharing the same abbreviation.
Feedback from the Rutherford County Emergency Communications District pointed said that could affect emergency responders. The Murfreesboro Transportation Department also stated that it would not be advisable to use the âDr.â abbreviation as a prefix.

MURFREESBORO, TN – Since being officially designated by Congress in 1991, public safety agencies across the country have recognized the instrumental role played by 911 telecommunicators during National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. Public Safety Telecommunicators are the dedicated professionals who answer 911 calls from citizens, process requests for service, and utilize technical skills to provide communications support to law enforcement, fire and rescue departments and emergency medical services. This week in April is dedicated to America’s truly “First-First Responders” who serve our communities as public safety telecommunicators. These “technology” responders have shown extra commitment and dedication during the many difficulties brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Nashville Christmas Day bombing.
