Railways on Wednesday rolled out its first air conditioned three-tier economy class coach which is being touted by the ministry to be “synonymous with the cheapest and best AC travel in the world”.
These coaches, officials said, will be “economical” and in between the current AC three-tier and non-AC sleeper class.
This LHB coach was rolled out of the Rail Coach Factory (RCF) Kapurthala to the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) Lucknow for trials.

The India Railways on Wednesday rolled out its first air-conditioned three-tier economy class coach on Wednesday, which the ministry is touting as the cheapest and best AC travel in the world . The newly designed three-tier AC coaches were rolled out from the Rail Coach Factory (RFC) Kapurthala to Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO), Lucknow for the upcoming trial.
This LHB three-tier coach was conceived by RCF Kapurthala and work on its design started in October 2020 with the approval of the Railways Ministry.

These rakes would be made at three production units of railways â 24 at the ICF in Chennai, 10 at Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala and the remaining 10 at Modern Coach Factory in Raebareli, as per the contract.
After 22 months of launching Vande Bharat Express for Katra, Indian Railways has awarded the prestigious contract for manufacturing of 44 more such trains at an estimated cost of Rs 2,211 crore.
In what could be described as a major push to the Make in India initiative, the Hyderabad-based Medha Servo Drives bagged the contract for making 44 Vande Bharat trains with 16 coaches each.
