Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait on Wednesday announced that the farmer groups protesting against the Centre s new farm laws will be holding a rail roko (railway blockade) across the country on Thursday. The protest will be staged from 12 pm to 4 pm.
A release issued by Northern Railway said that due to the farmers agitation in Punjab, the Darbhanga-Amritsar Express special train, which was to start on Wednesday, will remain cancelled.
The protest will be staged from 12 PM to 4 PM. The BKU leader, who has been spearheading the farmers’ agitation, said the people from their villages will also take part in the protest. He added that adequate arrangements have been made for the children travelling by the trains.
Remain peaceful: Tikait
“From 12 noon to 4 p.m., farmers will stop trains by going to the nearest railway station. They will welcome the trains with flower garlands and then communicate with passengers. They will also provide water, milk and tea to the passengers,” said Bharatiya Kisan Union-Tikait leader Rakesh Tikait, on the eve of the protest. He appealed to the farmers to remain peaceful and to commuters to take time to listen to the farmers’ demands.
“A successful rail roko will force the government to break the deadlock,” said Kul Hind Kisan Sabha leader Baldev Singh Nihalgarh.
A three-hour chakka jam or road blockade on February 6 saw the most extensive response in Punjab and Haryana, where the agitation has been most widespread and long-lasting. A number of other States saw some large gatherings in scattered locations but failed to have mass impact.

The railways have deployed 20 additional companies of the RPSF across the country, with a focus on Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal, in the wake of the rail roko called on Thursday by farmer unions protesting against the Centre s new agriculture laws.
The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella body of protesting farmer unions that is leading the protest, last week had announced the rail blockade to press for its demand to repeal the opposed bills.
