Russia has ordered its troops amassing at the border with Ukraine to pull back, dialling down fears of an imminent invasion that threatened to pull the West into conflict with Vladimir Putin.
An estimated 100,000 Russian troops had moved to the border and into the Russia-occupied Crimean peninsula, something the region has not seen since major hostilities in eastern Ukraine in 2014-2015.

The risk of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny dying in prison, as well as Russian aggression in Ukraine and in EU states, is to dominate foreign ministers talks on Monday (19 April). We call on the Russian authorities to grant him [Navalny] immediate access to medical professionals he trusts. The Russian authorities are responsible for Mr. Navalny s safety and health in the penal colony, to which we hold them to account, EU foreign relations chief Josep Borrell said on Sunday.

Ukraine has invited EU foreign relations chief Josep Borrell to visit its front line with Russia, in what one EU diplomat said would be his best revenge for his recent humiliation in Moscow. I would like to invite you to visit the contact line in Donbas [a region in east Ukraine] at the earliest possible time, Ukraine s foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba wrote in a letter to Borrell earlier this week, seen by EUobserver.
