The nation now has 331 million people, up from 308 million a decade ago. South Carolina grew at its slowest pace since the 1970 Census, or 10.7% or 493,061 people. It had 15% growth rates in the 2010 and 2000 Censuses. But 10.7% is not a small number, it s the 11th fastest growing state although it may show signs of relative slowdown in growth. South Carolina was ranked as the 8th fastest growing state in the most recent annual estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2019.

How today s Census figures could help South Carolina

South Carolina grew by 10.7%, or 493,061 people, in the past decade, according to U.S. Census Bureau figures released today. The state has a population of 5,118,425 people, a rise from the last full Census count in 2010 of 4,625,364 people. South Carolina could get a greater proportion of federal money if the state grows relative to others when the state population figures from U.S. Census Bureau figures are released today. North Carolina gained a seat in Congress, along with two seats for Texas and one seat went to Oregon, Montana, Colorado and Florida.  California, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and New York lost seats.
