Unit 5 Hires Director Of Diversity, Equity And Inclusion

WGLT The Unit 5 school district has hired a director of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Dr. Kristal Shelvin will assume the role beginning July 1. Unit 5 Superintendent Kristen Weikle said Shelvin will oversee implementation of the district’s equity action plan. She also will work with stakeholders in the district and community on issues related to curriculum, communication, and staff diversity. Kristal Shelvin is Unit 5 s new director of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Unit 5 school board approved Shelvin’s hiring during Wednesday’s meeting at Normal Community West High School. “I feel like this is just one more example of truly Unit 5 being on the cutting edge, because I don’t know of any other central Illinois school districts that have a director of diversity, equity, and inclusion,” Weikle told the board.

Rockford Public School to get $220 million in federal spending

That figure will soon increase. Gov. JB Pritzker announced Wednesday the 28,000-student school district can look forward to receiving $220 million thanks to President Joe Biden s $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan signed into law in March to aid the nation in the recovery of the COVID-19 pandemic. Prtizker, who made the announcement in the Ellis Elementary School gymnasium, praised Rockford Public Schools for offering families of students from pre-K to 12th grade a choice between in-person and remote-only instruction since the first day of the school year. But still, we re all wondering if this was a lost year for many children, he said. We worry about how living through this pandemic will impact their future.
