On May 31, 2020, Rockford Police officers responded to Soto s Jewelry on E. State for a burglary, according to Rockford Police. Police said the glass entry door was shattered along with two windows. There was more damage inside the story and multiple jewelry pieces were stolen, police said. On Wednesday, Maurice Buchanan, 24, of Rockford, and Donnie Purifoy, 28, of Rockford were charged with burglary. Soto s Jewelry Store was one of several businesses burglarized in the late hours of May 30, 2020 and early morning of May 31, 2020. Earlier on May 30, protesters and police clashed on the lawn of Rockford Police District 1.

Apr 27, 2021 A Black driver has filed a lawsuit against the city of Rockford over a traffic stop arrest from March 2019. Footage from the dashcam shows the incident involving Thurman King and Rockford Police Officer Zachary Abbate. King s attorney Stephen Drew says the officer claimed King s license plate light was out and that he ran a stop sign. However, footage from the dashcam shows King stopped at the stop sign. The video does not clearly show the license plate light. King says he was half a block from home and did not want to stop in an isolated area, so he pulled into his driveway.

Names of Rockford motorists killed, injured in collision released

ROCKFORD The name of a man killed Sunday in a vehicle collision and the name of the driver who crashed into him while attempting to flee police were released Monday. About 4:50 p.m., Rockford Police SCOPE Team officers attempted to stop a fleeing vehicle with stop sticks. The vehicle evaded the device and fled from police. About a mile later, the suspect vehicle crashed into another vehicle at Harrison Avenue and Ninth Street. The crash resulted in the death of Raymond N. Jackson, 43, of Rockford. Two children,  a 2-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy, remain hospitalized at a local area hospital.
