A tourist from Adelaide has been fined $13,000 after he escaped hotel quarantine just hours after landing in Perth to go clubbing with a friend in the city.
The 25-year-old fronted Perth Magistrates Court on Tuesday where he pleaded guilty to five counts of failing to comply with a direction under the Emergency Management Act.

The man landed at Perth Airport from Adelaide on December 11 and was given a direction to self-quarantine for 14 days in a city hotel.

Beefed-up powers for WA hotel quarantine security guards under revised emergency legislation

The state government has moved quickly to beef up the powers of hotel quarantine security guards after a woman walked out of the Pan Pacific and roamed Perth for 12 hours at the weekend.
Under the revised Emergency Management Act, security guards will receive additional training and have better legal protection to physically prevent travellers from breaching quarantine.
Health Minister Roger Cook has announced new hotel quarantine security measures following a breach of the system on the weekend.

The assessment process to determine whether travellers should be deemed high-risk and sent to a police-guarded hotel will also be amended and the Department of Health will work with hotels to review the physical barriers preventing people from leaving quarantine.
