Restaurant workers, taxi drivers can get COVID vaccine if local officials agree, Cuomo says
Cuomo allows local governments to vaccinate restaurant workers UP NEXT
ALBANY – New York will allow local governments to administer the COVID-19 vaccine to restaurant workers, taxi or app-based drivers and facilities that care for the developmentally disabled, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Tuesday.
Cuomo s decision, announced during a briefing in Manhattan, came as he s faced pressure from a variety of industries and local government leaders pushing for one group or another to be added to the list of eligible vaccine recipients.
The decision was announced a day after he dismissed calls from politicians to expand eligibility as cheap and insincere because the current pool of 7 million eligible recipients far outpaces the 300,000 or so first vaccine doses the state receives each week.
County Executive Ed Day has issued a State of Emergency banning travel on all county and local roads for all but essential business, which began at 6:00 AM Monday morning. County leaders say their offices continue to be deluged by calls about the COVID-19 vaccine, which is in short supply. Saying they, too, are frustrated, they’re asking residents to be patient.
Democratic Ulster County Executive Pat Ryan says he continues to be frustrated by the slow vaccine rollout. Last week, New York state received 300,000 vaccine doses for a pool of some 7 million eligible New Yorkers. This week, Ryan notes, the state received 250,000.
“What does that mean in Ulster County? Well, it means two things. Number one, it means, more than anything, we need more vaccines. We need more vaccines,” Ryan says. “We need them now, and the only entity capable of upping this is the federal government, and so I want to be very clear that the responsibility lies there.”
