Chennai, Jan 22: In a bid to gather confidence amongst the health workers about the safety of COVID-19 vaccines, Tamil Nadu Health Minister C Vijayabaskar took the coronavirus vaccine at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital on Friday.
According to the union health ministry s guidelines, only health professionals across the country will be administered the COVID vaccine dosages during the first phase. Vijayabaskar, in his capacity as a doctor and member of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has volunteered to be inoculated. I will be taking the #Covidvaccine shot at 9 am @gmcrgggh. I am doing this as a doctor & member of IMA, to instill confidence among Health Care Workers. Tamil Nadu Health Minister C Vijayabhaskar, a medical doctor, received the COVID-19 vaccination here on Friday. I got vaccinated today as a member of the medical fraternity and to instill confidence among the fellow healthcare personnel. I have not taken this as a minister, he told reporters after receiving the Covaxin shot at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital here.
He said there should not be any kind of hesitation among the public to get themselves vaccinated. I request all to get vaccinated and safeguard themselves from COVID-19 , he added.
Tamil Nadu food and civil supplies minister R Kamaraj
Chennai: The health condition of state food and civil supplies minister R Kamaraj, who was discharged from a private hospital following treatment for Covid-19 a week ago, is critical, according to doctors attending on him. He is on life support including ECMO.
His condition remains critical though his vital parameters had stabilised after he was put on life support. Doctors said the viral infection has severely affected his lung function. “We are treating him aggressively knowing well the recovery will be slow,” said a senior doctor at the MGM Hospital.
The minister, who was discharged after a week’s treatment from a private hospital, returned with severe breathlessness two days ago. On Tuesday morning, he was shifted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, where he was put on a ventilator. Coverage more than thrice the number of persons inoculated on first two days
On the third day of the COVID-19 immunisation programme on Monday, 10,256 persons were administered the vaccines, across Tamil Nadu. Till date, the vaccines have been administered to 16,462 healthcare workers.
The day’s coverage was more than thrice the number of persons vaccinated on the first and second day. On the first day of the vaccine rollout, 3,126 persons (3,027 received Covishield doses and 99 Covaxin) were covered, while a total of 3,080 (2,897 received Covishield doses and 183 Covaxin) were covered on the second.
Of the day’s capacity to vaccinate 17,100 persons with doses of Covishield, 10,051 were covered, while 205 of the planned 600 received Covaxin. With this, Covishield has been administered to 15,975 persons and Covaxin to 487. A total of 177 sessions have been held in the State.

About 16,755 total vaccinators involved across India during the COVID vaccination drive. There was no post adverse event reported after the vaccination was administered to the people.
