Accidental shooting victim not officer | News, Sports, Jobs

Dec 16, 2020 An accidental shooting that was reported Saturday took place at an off-duty Maui Police Department officer’s home in Waiehu, though the victim was not an officer, police confirmed Tuesday evening. Police were dispatched to the home at 11 p.m. Saturday for a report of a man who had been accidentally shot. When they arrived on scene, police found the home unoccupied and were informed that the victim had been taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room. The 26-year-old male suffered a gunshot wound and was transported to the Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu for further treatment.

US passes 300,000 deaths from COVID as vaccinations start

According to the Johns Hopkins Dashboard, the United States has added 270,573 cases in the last 24 hours. In the last day, the number of people who have died in the U.S. from  COVID-19 increased by 1,640. Vaccines to reach Big Island early next week

December 15, 2020 at 6:37 am Hilton Raethel of the Hawaii Healthcare Association says vials of the Pfizer/ BioNTech vaccine should be shipped to the Big Island hospitals  early next week, for vaccinations to begin. Hilo Medical Center and Kona Community Hospital, both part of the state’s Hawaii Health Systems Corporation, have both said their facilities are ready to begin vaccinating those front line health care workers who want to receive the vaccine.  Because the vaccine is under Emergency Use Authorization and not fully approved by the FDA, employers will not be requiring their employees to get the vaccine at this time.  Pfizer says it will be submitting additional safety data to the FDA and expects to request full approval from the FDA within 6 months.

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii’s mass vaccination effort is set to begin Tuesday, marking a turning point in the fight against COVID-19 in the islands. The first shots will be administered to health care workers at the Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu, particularly those who have direct contact with COVID-19 patients, officials said. The hospital received the state’s first shipment of Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine just before 8 a.m. Monday. It came inside a thermo-insulated container packed in dry ice.

Dr. Lester Morehead works in the COVID unit at the Queen’s Medical Center. He volunteered to get the shot. He was asked afterwards how he felt. “I’m honored,” said Morehead. “I want others to get it. My biggest fear is people won’t get the vaccine.”
