New technology reads 300-year-old letter without opening it

The 1697 letter sent by Jacques Sennacques in Paris to his cousin Pierre Le Pers in the Hague © Unlocking History Research Group A letter posted more than 300 years ago from Paris to the Hague, but never delivered or opened, has been read for the first time through X-rays and computer algorithms, preserving the complex folds used to turn the letter into its own envelope at a time when paper was scarce and expensive. The letter was sent on 31 July 1697 by Jacques Sennacques in Paris to his cousin Pierre Le Pers, a French merchant in the Hague, requesting a certified copy of the death notice of of their relative Daniel le Pers. It was never delivered but remained with hundreds of orphaned letters in a leather trunk owned by the Dutch postmaster. The trunk was given to a postal museum in 1926 but only opened and studied in the last decade by the Unlocking History Research Group, an international team including historians, conservators, scientists and comp

Small fat reduction could save thousands of lives say researchers

Small fat reduction could save thousands of lives say researchers 11 A new study from scientists at Queen Mary University London claims a small reduction in fat in some of the country’s favourite foods could prevent thousands of deaths over the coming years. The study says a small fat reduction in foods like pizza could help prevent cases of type 2 diabetes A new study led by researchers from the Wolfson Institute, Queen Mary University of London, has proposed a comprehensive fat reduction model, which they claim would be an effective strategy to reduce excessive calories in manufactured and out-of-home food and over five years prevent 4.5 million people from becoming overweight and developing obesity.

Factors behind Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action grant wins

Factors behind Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action grant wins The University of Oslo in Norway is punching above its weight in terms of the number of Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Individual Fellowships awarded in the announcement by the European Commission on 8 February, hosting 25 overall, including 11 in the humanities faculty alone. There are indications, for instance, that the MSCA fellows (grantees) perform better on average both before and after the grant. Per Magnus Kommandantvold, who is the national coordinator for MSCA in the Research Council of Norway, told

Black Holes Could Get So Humongous, Astronomers Came Up With a New Size Category

Black Holes Could Get So Humongous, Astronomers Came Up With a New Size Category There are supermassive black holes. There are ultramassive black holes. How large can these strange objects grow? Well, there could be something even bigger than ultramassive:  stupendously large black holes, according to the latest research.   Such hypothetical black holes - larger than 100 billion times the mass of the Sun - have been explored in a new paper which names them SLABs, an acronym that stands for Stupendously LArge Black holeS . We already know that black holes exist over a vast range of masses, with a supermassive black hole of 4 million solar masses residing at the centre of our own galaxy, explained astronomer Bernard Carr of Queen Mary University London.
