A year of COVID-19: A look back at the pandemic s effects on La Jolla

Until a year ago, the term “social distancing” wasn’t in the national lexicon and wearing masks was not the norm. But the COVID-19 pandemic changed our behaviors swiftly and often, from staying home to “flattening the curve” to donating meals to hospital workers to searching for vaccination appointments. We learned to access work, school and entertainment via Zoom and other virtual platforms. Restaurants adapted to takeout models and, along with other businesses, have ping-ponged among various modes of operation as coronavirus cases have swelled and ebbed. As we mark the anniversary of the first life-altering pandemic restrictions, the La Jolla Light looks back at the past whirlwind year of COVID-19.

CARDER HENRY | APSU ATHLETICS The APSU men’s and women’s cross-country teams wrapped up their abbreviated seasons on March 1 after hosting the OVC Championships at Weakley Park. In a typical season, the Governors would have come into their championship races having already competing in five or six meets. Due to the pandemic and inclement weather, the Governors had only seen competitive action a single time. Kennedy, Jr. announced today that Robert Fitzgerald of Rochester, NY, who was convicted of failing to collect and pay over payroll taxes to the Internal Revenue Service, was sentenced to serve one year probation and ordered to pay $122,207.16 in restitution to the IRS by Chief U.S. District Judge Frank P. Geraci, Jr. Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard A. Resnick, who handled the case, stated that the defendant was the principal corporate officer of Fitzgerald Coaching Inc., a Western New York real estate listings referral company. Fitzgerald was required to collect and pay over Social Security and Medicare taxes to the Internal Revenue Service on behalf of the company. During the years 2010 through 2017, Fitzgerald Coaching Inc. failed to report wages that were subject to Social Security and Medicare taxes totaling $55,487.65.
