NATIONAL NEWS - Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Minister, Barbara Creecy, has welcomed the declaration of the Ingula Nature Reserve as a wetland of international importance by the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance.
The nature reserve sits along the northernmost part of the Drakensberg mountain range, between the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal.
The site falls within the Northern Drakensberg Strategic Water Source Area (SWSA) and a National Freshwater Ecosystem Priority Area and is made up of hillslope wetlands, pans/depressions and floodplains.
This addition brings the number of South Africa’s Ramsar Sites to 27 covering a surface area of 571.089 hectares.

February 2, 2021, marked the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, in Ramsar, Iran. The day is also celebrated annually as the World Wetlands Day. The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands is the intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources.
The contracting parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands recognise the fundamental ecological functions of wetlands as regulators of water regimes and as habitats supporting a characteristic flora and fauna and that wetlands constitute a resource of great economic, cultural, scientific, and recreational value, the loss of which would be irreparable.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has proposed the establishment of a network of Ramsar sites and wetland reserves around Vietnam.

A Ramsar site is a wetland site designated to be of international importance under the Ramsar Convention, an intergovernmental environmental treaty established in 1971 by UNESCO that came into force in 1975.
Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Vo Tuan Nhan said creating such a network would contribute to promoting the implementation of the Ramsar Convention’s mission in Vietnam and on a global scale.
