QUEZON CITY, Feb. 11 Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Roy A. Cimatu hailed the inclusion of the Sasmuan Pampanga Coastal Wetlands (SPCW) in the Ramsar Convention s List of Wetlands of International Importance as a demonstration of the country s commitment to protect wetland ecosystems. The Sasmuan Pampanga Coastal Wetlands fulfills four criteria of the Ramsar Convention, which confirms the international significance of its biodiversity and its services both at the species and ecosystems level, Cimatu said in his keynote speech delivered by Undersecretary for Attached Agencies and Chief of Staff Rodolfo Garcia.
Usec Garcia delivered the speech during the virtual celebration of the 50th World Wetlands Day that was organized by the Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB) on Tuesday, February 2.

THE Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has ordered property developers to stop housing developments on Monavale Wetlands.
Monavale Vlei is a protected area under the international Ramsar Convention, a treaty for conservation and sustainable use of wetlands to which the country has been a signatory since 2011.
EMA has however ordered property developers to stop the housing and all forms of developments on the site.
The development was revealed on Twitter by the Zimbabwe Lawyers For Human Rights (ZLHR) which has also been advocating the protection of the environmentally sensitive areas.
“EMA orders property developer to stop housing developments on Monavale wetland, a #Ramsar site&critical primary water source in Harare following protests by @Harare Wetlands&COSMO represented by @ZLHRLawyer,” read the tweet.

AMMAN On the occasion of World Wetlands Day (WWD), the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) continues to reinforce its efforts in raising global awareness of the vital role of wetlands.
World Wetland Day, observed annually on February 2, aims to highlight wetlands’ importance, as well as, strengthen actions to reverse its loss. This day also marks the date of the adoption of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 1971, according to an RSCN statement sent to The Jordan Times on Tuesday.
