Taxi drivers taking precautions - Barbados Today

Taxi drivers taking precautions Article by January 9, 2021 Some senior public transportation operators have dismissed as rumours, information circulating on social media alleging that several taxi drivers have been tested for COVID-19 after one of their colleagues who operates from a west coast property tested positive for the virus. A message has been making the rounds, saying it was confirmed that “a guy” from a taxi stand at a west coast property tested positive for COVID. “As a precaution, the other drivers were tested and told to quarantine at home awaiting results. The guys went straight back to work and are still on the job as we speak,” the message read.

ZR and taxi drivers urged to adhere to COVID-19 protocols

by Marlon Madden As Barbados continues to grapple with rising numbers in local COVID-19 cases, one public transportation sector official is calling for support in the training of taxi, ZR and minibus operators in protocols to help protect them from the infectious virus. In fact, with one individual who later turned out to be positive having travelled on a taxi to the airport, Chairman of the Alliance Owners of Public Transportation (AOPT) Roy Raphael told Barbados TODAY the time had come for more stringent measures to be put in place for those travelling on public transportation. “We heard of a case where people stop a taxi and go to the airport and one of them turned out to be COVID-19 positive,” said Raphael, in an apparent reference to a recent incident involving UK national Love Island star Zara Holland and her boyfriend, who reportedly tried to flee the island last week.

Changes to bus service during curfew

Social Share Some routes serviced by Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) will be affected by the current 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew and members of the Alliance Owners of Public Transport (AOPT) will be meeting via Zoom at 6 p.m. today to discuss the next steps. The Transport Board also announced its last service from Bridgetown would depart at 8 p.m. On Friday, Prime Minister Mia Mottley increased the length of the curfew by three hours, starting January 2 for the next seven days. During that time, there are to be no banquets, fetes or limes. AOPT chairman Roy Raphael said their operators, who span the PSV, taxi and minibus sectors, as well as car hire, share the same concerns as the general public.
