Biden s AG ends Trump ban on sanctuary cities receiving funding if they don t cooperate with ICE

Merrick Garland ended a Trump-era policy blocking sanctuary cities from receiving millions in funding from the Justice Department as punishment for refusing to work with federal enforcement agencies attempting to crack down on illegal immigration. Joe Biden s attorney general quietly issued a memo two weeks ago that ended former President Donald Trump s order. In a new memo obtained by Reuters Wednesday acting DOJ Programs head Maureen Henneberg directs the agency to restart any pending grants that were stopped under the previous policy. The Department informed grant recipients and applicants that they will continue receiving certain Department grants without making certifications, the DOJ writes on its community-oriented policing page.

A memo limiting $250 million in funding to local police departments if they didn t agree to work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials was issued by then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions in 2017 following an executive order by former President Trump. Garland rescinded that in a memo signed two weeks ago, and a new memo obtained by Reuters Wednesday directs the Justice Department to reinitiate the process on any pending grants that would have required cooperation with immigration authorities.

International Olympic Committee Rules on Athletes Demonstrating Political, Religious or Racial Propaganda

(AP Photo/David J. Phillip, File) If you’ve wondered whether there’ll be kneeling at the Tokyo Olympics, here’s news you can use. As reported by Reuters Wednesday, following a consultation with athletes, the International Olympic Committee has decided against it. The edict bans both kneeling and raising fists into the air. Per Rule 50, there’ll be no “demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda.” That goes for event venues and any other Olympic areas. Reuters notes there’ve been calls to reverse the rule, in light of the Black Lives Matter movement. Some have said Olympians should be able to gesture in favor of their preferred cause.
