Image: Twitter/@TheHill (Reuters) – U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday urged Central Americans without travel papers not undertake risky journeys to the United States, as the Biden administration grapples with fast-rising irregular immigration across the southern border. Speaking at an online meeting with officials in El Paso and Mexico’s Ciudad Juarez at the start of a “virtual visit” that included conversations with Mexican ministers, Blinken said the United States was strictly enforcing border laws. “The border is closed to irregular migration,” Blinken said. In recent weeks, numbers of apprehensions at the border have jumped sharply, as Central Americans flee the worst humanitarian crisis in a generation triggered by devastating hurricanes and the coronavirus pandemic. The number of people going hungry in Central America has nearly quadrupled in the last two years.
