FALL RIVER - Azoreans around the world will elect from May 20 to 24 their 19 representatives to the newly created Azorean Diaspora Council, a consultative body chaired by the President of the Regional Government of Azores that aims to ensure the participation, collaboration and consultation of all those who wish to contribute to the Azores development project.
This body will be responsible, among other matters, for issuing opinions on legislation, programs or measures developed by the Regional Government related to Azorean emigration and Diaspora, as well as contributing to the definition and coordination of policies to strengthen relations between the Diaspora and the Region.
RI Day of Portugal Committee awards $6,000 in scholarships
PROVIDENCE – The Day of Portugal and Portuguese Heritage in Rhode Island recently awarded six scholarships to Portuguese-American students to help them achieve their post-secondary education goals.
The $1,000 scholarships were awarded to students who applied and demonstrated academic excellence and a commitment to completing an approved course of study.
The recipients are:
Kayla Kelliher, Psychology, Rhode Island College;
Michaela Alarie, Biomedical Engineering, Hajim School of Engineering;
Juliet Antonio, Arts& Sciences – Theatre, Rhode Island College;
Aalyah Ribeiro, Marketing, Bryant University;
Sara Terrien, Political Science, College of the Holy Cross
Scholarship candidates have at least 25% Portuguese ancestry, a minimum 3.0 G.P.A. and matriculated full time into a four-year college or university, community college or technical school program. Graduating high school seniors as well as students attending hig
