A new partnership between the Richard K. Mellon Foundation and Arctaris Impact Investors, a Boston-based impact investment group, is launching a $20 million investment fund to underwrite economic development projects in distressed communities in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties.
The fund, unveiled Wednesday, will target projects that support economic development, workforce training, infrastructure and sustainable job creation in qualified Opportunity Zones in the counties.
Opportunity Zones are designated areas of distressed communities that carry special tax incentives for investment and development.

Handmade Arcade, Pittsburgh’s largest independent craft fair, is once again offering shoppers the chance to virtually connect with local artisans.
After converting its annual winter event, typically held at Downtown’s David L. Lawrence Convention Center, to a virtual event last December because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Handmade Arcade is readying for its Virtual Spring Marketplace.
The online event takes place from April 30 through May 2 and features up to 50 makers who live or work in Allegheny County.
Tricia Brancolini-Foley, Handmade Arcade’s executive director, says the market’s primary goal is to help connect consumers to artisans who have faced hardship during the pandemic.
The partnership found ways to support Downtown businesses during the pandemic, said Michael Zawojski, executive chef and director of food and beverage at Revel + Roost on Forbes Avenue. So, when he heard of this latest campaign, he said yes immediately.

Zawojski said he is seeing more people return to eating out. With the weather improving, they plan to set up outdoor dining tables next week.
“People are starting to feel comfortable, and some have even held vaccination celebrations,” he said. “Where all four people at the table have been vaccinated and they can enjoy a night out. That is kind of heartwarming to see. I think the public is realizing how much they appreciate the luxury of having a meal prepared for them. That got taken away with the pandemic.”

WELLSBORO The PA Wilds Center for Entrepreneurship (PA Wilds Center) announced Monday it is opening its second PA Wilds Conservation Shop at Leonard Harrison State Park via a mobile unit this summer, expanding visitor services at the busy state park and improving market access for rural entrepreneurs and businesses looking to serve its thousands of visitors.
