Post-election fighting escalates in the Central African Republic

Post-election fighting escalates in the Central African Republic share In the Central African Republic (CAR), severe fighting erupted in the aftermath of the presidential election that was held on Dec. 27, 2020. In what the government has called an “attempted coup,” a coalition of armed rebel groups launched numerous attacks, including on the capital city of Bangui. Violence continues ahead of the announcement of the official election results.   On Jan. 18, 2021, CAR’s Constitutional Court is expected to rule on the validity of the election results. It could confirm incumbent President Faustin-Archange Touadéra as the winner of the election. Provisional results showed him with 54% of the vote and thus avoiding a Feb. 14 run-off that would be triggered if no candidate obtained an absolute majority.

BANGUI, Central African Republic (AP) Security forces in Central African Republic repelled attacks by rebels trying to seize the capital early Wednesday after intense fighting on the city’s outskirts, officials said, in a major escalation of violence that has rocked the country since last month. The rebels are protesting the re-election on Dec. 27 of President Faustin-Archange Touadera. Following the Jan. 4 announcement of Touadera’s victory, the rebel coalition threatened to take the capital. They had also taken towns in other parts of the country before the election.
