Report about possibly renaming six schools delayed until 2022
Review is in response to petitions circulated last summer

The Montgomery County Board of Education has delayed the due date for a report about whether six communities want to rename their schools by about a year, to 2022.
In October, the school board unanimously passed a resolution requiring the superintendent to work with the schools Richard Montgomery High, Thomas S. Wootton High, Montgomery Blair High, Col. Zadok Magruder High, Francis Scott Key Middle and John Poole Middle to “determine whether these communities have expressed an interest in renaming the schools.”

ROCKVILLE, MD Damon Monteleone is leaving his role as principal of Richard Montgomery High School for a new position as assistant chief of the Office of Teaching, Learning and Schools for the Montgomery County Public School District.
The school board approved his appointment at its meeting Thursday afternoon. The district will begin the process of looking for Monteleone s successor at Richard Montgomery High School.

USDA extends waivers for free meals through June 2022
The United States Department of Agriculture announced this week it is extending waivers through the 2021-22 academic year that allow school districts to distribute meals to children at no cost.
The extension will last until June 2022. Before this week’s announcement, the waivers would have expired in September.
The waivers, used by MCPS, allow meals to be served at no cost, in bulk and to parents without their children being present. They were first passed at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic as worries about food insecurity rose.
