Richmond annual town meeting preview

Where: Richmond Consolidated School, 1831 State Road (Route 41), gymnasium. A large turnout is expected this year as voters consider whether to approve a major investment with a massive payoff, promising to create what this rural community lacks: The semblance of a centrally located “downtown” to replace a century-old, deteriorated and hazardous Town Hall and a cramped, rented library in a former garage. Town Center project: Enthusiastically recommended by the Finance Committee, the proposed town offices, community center and library complex would be the largest building project since the renovation and expansion of the Richmond Consolidated School 20 years ago. Requiring financing toward an estimated cost of up to $6.8 million, a two-thirds supermajority is required for approval. A $1.9 million town hall/library proposal came up eight votes short in 2002, and a revised plan failed in 2005 by a handful of votes. Selectman Roger Manzolini, a strong advocate of the project,

Ruth Bass: Mowed paths work as blueprint for new Richmond Town Hall, library

RICHMOND — Park at the school. Stroll across the field and up the hill and walk into a new Town Hall and library. Your feet will be on grass, not flooring, but it’s a creative chance to visualize the possibilities. Precise mowing and red-tagged stakes outline the shape of a new town building that would replace a cramped, rented library building and a decrepit Town Hall. Richmond voters who take this walk will be on the knoll of land Richmond voters bought decades ago, taking advantage of its availability in case the town would need a new Town Hall. Someday. And now, someday has arrived.

Vote will confirm if stars are aligning for Richmond town complex

RICHMOND — The fate of a proposed $6.6 million town center complex north of the Richmond Consolidated School will be in the hands of annual town meeting voters next month. The planned town offices, community center and library would be the largest building project since the major renovation and expansion of Richmond Consolidated School, completed in 2000. A site visit, giving the public a tour of the location, is scheduled from 10 to noon May 1. The property, where the tennis court is located, was purchased by the town in 1996. The traditional “baby town meeting” to inform voters is scheduled for 10 a.m. May 8, also at the school.
