(WWBT) - The Richmond Ambulance Authority is working to make vaccinations more accessible, offering the Moderna vaccine to people in their homes. The program began on April 12 in an effort to vaccinate community members who are homebound and unable to get to a vaccination site, doctor’s office or pharmacy, in the Richmond Henrico Health District, The program was briefly put on hold after the FDA recommended pausing the use of the Johnson and Johnson (J&J) vaccine due to rare cases of blood clotting. (WWBT) - Dozens of people came to the Richmond Raceway on Sunday afternoon for a walk-up mass vaccination clinic focused on helping residents who are refugees, immigrants and minorities. The clinic offered the Moderna vaccine along with on-site registration and translators for those that spoke another language. “This event is specifically for those of immigrant and refugee communities with a special focus on those of Asian and Hispanic descent,” said Monica Smith-Callahan, deputy county manager for community affairs with Henrico County.

The health district said that call centers were working to reach out to those on that list as soon as possible. As far as doses, the health district said they re still getting 10,000 to 12,000 each week, which has allowed them to reach more of the population. In fact, they are planning a special walk-up vaccine event on Sunday in hopes of reaching vulnerable groups where language barriers may stand in the way of learning more about the vaccine.

The Richmond-Henrico Health District established the fund with community doula organizations to try and reduce the health impacts on Black mothers caused by racial bias in the healthcare system, officials said. A doula is a labor support person who helps an expecting mother before, during, and after the birth of her baby. Stephanie Spence, Director of Urban Baby Beginnings, said both mother and child experience better health and emotional outcomes when working with a doula.
