In second vote, Planning Board approves preliminary site plan for proposed solar project
On its second chance, the Calverton Solar Energy Center (also known as NextEra) received preliminary site plan approval from the Riverhead Planning Board to build a 22.9-megawatt commercial solar energy production facility on two parcels of land one on River Road and one on Edwards Avenue.
The Planning Board voted 4-1 with board chair Stan Carey casting the lone no vote. The board previously voted 3-2 against the proposal at its April 15 meeting, with members Joe Baier and Richard O’Dea joining Mr. Carey in voting no.
An annual downtown tradition will return in late summer.

The Riverhead Town Board on Tuesday unanimously adopted a resolution to approve an amendment fee waiver related to the special event application, which pushes the date back from Sunday, May 30 to Sunday, Sept. 5. The application was first submitted back in 2019 in advance of last year’s festival. The event, which would have been the 24th annual festival, had been postponed last spring due to the pandemic.

The Riverhead Town Board unanimously approved a resolution for a special event application for a two-day drag racing event in June at Enterprise Park at Calverton.
The Scrambul Runway Challenge will be held June 19-20 with rain dates of June 26-27, according to the resolution.
The resolution for the site plan application, which was submitted in February, was originally tabled for Tuesday’s Town Board meeting. But the Town Board first voted to untable it and the proceeded to approve it.
The approval for the runway use includes a $10,000 fee that will be paid to the town no later than June 1, according to the resolution.

Island Water Park is seeking a 20-year payment in lieu of taxes agreement, along with other tax incentives, on its proposed water park and recreational facility at the Enterprise Park at Calverton.
During a presentation Monday before the Riverhead Industrial Development Agency, Daniel Baker, an attorney for the applicant, said Island Water Park is seeking three incentives from the IDA.
These are an exemption from paying mortgage recording taxes, worth an estimated $75,000; an exemption from sales tax, estimated at about $1.3 million, and possibly higher; and the 20-year PILOT arrangement, the specifics of which are still being negotiated with the IDA.
